VINTAGE 2022
Grape quality in the 2022 vintage on Normandie was outstanding! After a high rainfall winter and spring of 2021, we had lower that average maximum temperatures from veraison leading up to harvest. During the final weeks prior to harvest, we had very few and perfectly timed rainfall incidents, which created the perfect microclimate for our grapes to reach optimum ripeness.
As a result of the good rainfall in winter 2021, our farm dam was overflowing long before end of winter, which is always amazing and a result of the incredible location and topography of Normandie Est.1693. Budding was even thanks to good (normal) weather during that window at the onset of spring, but it was soon pouring down again with frequent rainfall events during the rest of spring and early summer. Many rainy days were recorded during flowering and berry set. Berry set were to some extent inhibited by the rainy conditions, but thanks to the nature of the vine the impact was only moderately noticed in some of our Merlot sections. Our experienced vineyard team worked timeously on meticulous canopy management doing leaf thinning and crop control to bring perfect balance between crop load and vigour.
From veraison in mid-December onwards, we experienced below average maximum temperature throughout the season, with only a very few hot days. These conditions allowed for optimum ripening of our grapes.
As a result of the slightly cooler climate, our grapes had more of that much desired “hang time”! Harvest on Normandie Est.1693 was somewhat later that normal, which lead to exceptionally deep colour, flavour and concentration in our 2022 vintage red wine!
Vintage 2022 wines promise to be concentrated, deep in colour and full bodied.
