VINTAGE 2016
The winter conditions of 2015, leading up to the 2016 harvest, experienced below average rainfall and early budding as a result of the dryer, warmer conditions. The spring and summer of 2016 then endured very intense heat and extremely dry conditions.
High temperatures during the spring and mid-summer (October through January) caused vigorous initial growth. Dry conditions led to the vineyards being very healthy and reach perfectly moderate size canopies with the help of supplementary irrigation from our mountain reservoir on the estate.
Berries developed smaller and thus more concentrated in colour and flavour. Our meticulous canopy management enabled avoiding excessive sunburn on the grapes. Several crop thinning actions were done prior to harvest to ensure only perfect fruit arriving at the cellar. Our yield was 24.91 hectolitres per hectare.
Our Merlot reached perfect ripeness a couple of days earlier than the previous vintage. Slightly cooler conditions from mid-February were very positive for colour and flavour development in our Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot grapes.
The young red wine excites with firm structure, good fruit and great natural balance.
