VINTAGE 2014

One of the coolest and rainiest seasons in the past decade.  Still, a very cold and wet winter ensured an even bud burst. Initial vineyard growth was slow due to a cool, wet spring and early summer.  The climate was favourable during flowering and good berry set was obtained. High rainfall around mid-November resulted in strong vigour which required meticulous canopy management and crop control to achieve ideal canopy aeration and sunlight exposure.  Mild conditions during the very important ripening period provided slow and proper ripening, with cooler weather in March.  As a result, our grapes had excellent colour and elegant structure at very acceptable sugar levels. Our yield was 50.2 hectolitres per hectare.

A sophisticated, serious and dry Merlot rosé with a salmon-pink and onion skin hue. Delicate aromas of freshly pressed pomegranates and ripe strawberries evolve in the glass to more full-bodied flavours of ruby grapefruit, kiwi and hints of herbs on the palate. Supple tannins together with a fresh minerality lead to a lingering finish. The balanced mouthfeel is a result of full roundness that evolved during the 20-month bottle ageing combined with a refreshing natural acidity which carries the after taste. Our 2014 karen. vintage is a well-weighted dry rosé that boasts a complex character and a lingering finish.
